Business As Usual
What happens if we keep doing things the way we've been doing them
"Business As Usual" or the BAU scenario describes the estimated future emissions of a company, country, or the world in the absence of policy changes given present emissions and rates of growth. It can be thought of as a baseline projected forwards. Climate scientists’ projections show BAU to be unsustainable, as a critical mass of GHGs – above 450 ppm – will likely be reached by 2050. The need to prevent business from staying usual informs many of the concepts and policy solutions that appear on this site and elsewhere in the carbon world.
Additionality -- good carbon offsets are referred to as 'additional' -- is a property of emissions reductions that are not "business as usual."
